Increased risk to patients undergoing new robotic surgeries?

New technologies are constantly being introduced in the medical community, yet some doctors never receive the training they need to effectively use these devices on patients.

New technologies and techniques are constantly being advanced in order to help medical professionals administer the type of care needed to help treat certain ailments. In the 2000s, many doctors started using robots to assist with surgical procedures. A recent study examined the use of these devices in individuals with prostate cancer, and researchers uncovered some surprising results.

The study, by doctors at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, focused on those who had their prostates removed by a device approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000. Researchers examined both traditional and robotic surgeries of these patients from 2003 to 2009.

They learned that the risk of complications arising during these surgeries increased two-fold in 2006, when the robots were becoming more widely used. These complications included problems administering anesthesia, infections, breathing issues, as well as accidental cuts to the patient. Researchers feel these things happened due to the lack of training that some surgeons received prior to using the devices, which they believe potentially increases the likelihood that a patient will suffer some sort of additional health concerns, potentially giving rise to medical malpractice claims.

The FDA currently does not have any type of system that requires any amount of training when these kinds of devices are implemented. Surgeons are not required to demonstrate any expertise with these new technologies before they are able to be used in surgeries on patients.

Some have called for additional standards that require a specific training period before using robots to assist with medical procedures. This ensures that the team treating the patient will know how the procedures should go, and will know what to do should complications arise. This could also help officials learn more about the types of problems that are happening with these devices, and be able to focus instruction on these specific issues.

If you believe your condition has been worsened due to the negligence of a medical professional, you should speak to an experienced medical malpractice attorney. Because of the extremely technical nature of these kinds of cases, it is essential that you discuss your claims with someone who knows the types of issues that often arise.

It can be very difficult to prove that your doctor, physician or other health care worker acted in a negligent manner. Often, this will require the testimony of experts to show that the professionals did not adhere to the standard of care in your area. It is important that this information is presented in a way that the jury is able to understand your claims, in order to determine that the treatment was administered improperly. You should not try to handle these cases on your own.
